At first glance, the park looks like a desert, but it is far from it. This place receives about 125 centimeters (50 inches) of rain per year\u2014slightly more than Seattle and double what falls in London.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is a paradox: rows of sparkling white quartz dunes, some rising 30 meters (100 feet), soar over a mosaic of blue and green freshwater lagoons. The park\u2019s name stems from the Portuguese word len\u00e7\u00f3is<strong>, <\/strong>meaning \u201cbedsheets,\u201d a reference that makes the most sense when the park is viewed from afar. From that perspective, the sweeping curves of the largest coastal dune field in South America resemble a rumpled, white bedsheet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat-9\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/landsat-9\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Landsat 9<\/a> images were captured in June 2026, around the time when lagoon water levels typically peak. The partially impermeable layer of bedrock and clay beneath the sand prevents the lagoons from draining during the wet season. It spans about 900 square kilometers (350 square miles), roughly the size of New York City. From above, shallower lagoons appear light blue, often taking on turquoise or aquamarine hues as sunlight reflects off the sand below. Deeper lagoons are darker, a result of the deeper water absorbing more red, yellow, and green wavelengths, leaving mostly blue light to scatter back. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/water-science-school\/science\/sediment-and-suspended-sediment\" rel=\"noopener\">Suspended sediment<\/a>, microscopic algae, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usgs.gov\/labs\/organic-matter-research-laboratory\/what-organic-matter-0\" rel=\"noopener\">dissolved organic matter<\/a> also contribute to the array of colors, giving some lagoons greener and browner tones.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Green vegetation surrounds the dune field, which sits at the intersection of three <a href=\"https:\/\/salatainstitute.harvard.edu\/beyond-the-amazon-brazils-six-biomes-shape-a-global-climate-story\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazilian biomes<\/a>: the Amazon rainforest to the west, the tropical wooded savannas of the Cerrado to the south, and the dry shrublands and thorn forests of the Caatinga to the east. Closest to the dunes are mangroves and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic_Coast_restingas\" rel=\"noopener\">restinga forests<\/a>, ecosystems well adapted to sandy, coastal soils.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dune field exists because of the rare convergence of geologic and climatic conditions. Rivers, including the Mearim and Parna\u00edba, deliver the key ingredient\u2014quartz sand\u2014to this unusually flat portion of the Maranh\u00e3o coastline in massive quantities. It has accumulated here over the past few hundred thousand years driven in part by fluctuating sea levels and shoreline<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebsco.com\/research-starters\/earth-and-atmospheric-sciences\/transgression-and-regression\" rel=\"noopener\">transgression and regression<\/a><em>.<\/em> Persistent easterly trade winds have also played a critical role. During the dry season, winds often reach at least 50 kilometers per hour, fast enough to build the dunes and push them westward at a pace of roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/list\/1611\/#:~:text=4%20to%2025\" rel=\"noopener\">4 to 25 meters<\/a> per year. That is fast for sand dunes, though not the fastest in the world. The nearly constant movement of sand prevents vegetation from becoming established across much of the dune field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage site in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/document\/198949\" rel=\"noopener\">citing<\/a> its remarkable geology and rich biodiversity. The park is home to more than 850 documented species, including <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1007\/s11756-026-02217-1\" rel=\"noopener\">fish<\/a>, birds, <a href=\"https:\/\/zookeys.pensoft.net\/articles.php?id=3400\" rel=\"noopener\">reptiles<\/a>, mammals, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/6753141\/The_planktonic_community_in_tropical_interdunal_ponds_Len%C3%A7%C3%B3is_Maranhenses_National_Park_Maranh%C3%A3o_State_Brazil_A_comunidade_planct%C3%B4nica_em_lagoas_interdunares\" rel=\"noopener\">phytoplankton<\/a>. Among them are four endangered species, including the neotropical otter, West Indian manatee, scarlet ibis, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/leopardus-tigrinus\" rel=\"noopener\">oncilla<\/a> (a type of wild cat). Among the lagoons\u2019 most remarkable inhabitants are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fishbase.se\/summary\/Hoplias-malabaricus.html\" rel=\"noopener\">trahira<\/a><em> (Hoplias malabaricus)<\/em>, a predatory fish species with large canine-like teeth.
