Garrison<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stewart Island\/Rakiura is the third-largest island in New Zealand, diminutive in comparison to the country\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/the-north-island-new-zealand-150018\/\" rel=\"noopener\">North Island<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/earth\/earth-observatory\/the-south-island-new-zealand-8324\/\" rel=\"noopener\">South Island<\/a>. Yet it hosts a population of one of the largest of the kiwi: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzbirdsonline.org.nz\/species\/southern-brown-kiwi\" rel=\"noopener\">Stewart Island tokoeka<\/a>. This flightless bird, a subspecies of the Southern brown kiwi <em>(Apteryx australis)<\/em>, numbers in the thousands on the island, dwarfing its human population of <a href=\"https:\/\/tools.summaries.stats.govt.nz\/places\/SA2\/stewart-island\" rel=\"noopener\">approximately 500<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The avian national icon is just one slice of the natural riches on Stewart Island\/Rakiura, a roughly triangular piece of land about 30 kilometers (19 miles) south of the South Island. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/parks-and-recreation\/places-to-go\/southland\/places\/stewart-island-rakiura\/rakiura-national-park\/nature-and-history\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Rakiura National Park<\/a> covers about 85 percent of the bright green island. And as the M\u0101ori name\u2014Rakiura, meaning \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/teara.govt.nz\/en\/stewart-islandrakiura\/print\" rel=\"noopener\">glowing skies<\/a>\u201d\u2014suggests, it\u2019s a prime location for viewing the aurora australis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the northern half of the island, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/nature\/native-plants\/podocarp-hardwood-forests\/\" rel=\"noopener\">podocarp<\/a> and hardwood forests featuring coniferous trees with ancient lineages blanket the land. Other areas are covered in shrublands and wetlands, as well as coastal dunes such as those lining <a href=\"https:\/\/teara.govt.nz\/en\/photograph\/37645\/dunes-at-mason-bay\" rel=\"noopener\">Mason Bay<\/a>. A diversity of birdlife, including the kiwi, populates these relatively untouched ecosystems. Rats, which once preyed on bird eggs and chicks there, were deemed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/news\/media-releases\/2025-media-releases\/rat-found-on-ulva-island-triggers-response\/\" rel=\"noopener\">eradicated in 1997<\/a>, and the island has mostly remained free of non-native predators. Conservationists have since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/jul\/07\/new-zealand-to-embark-on-worlds-largest-feral-predator-eradication\" rel=\"noopener\">embarked<\/a> on a project on the much larger Stewart Island\/Rakiura to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/our-work\/predator-free-rakiura\/\" rel=\"noopener\">eliminate<\/a> rats, possums, feral cats, and hedgehogs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When darkness falls, Stewart Island\/Rakiura\u2019s human denizens can look skyward for the chance to observe stars, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/sun\/auroras\/\" rel=\"noopener\">auroras<\/a>, nearby\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eso.org\/public\/images\/b01\/\" rel=\"noopener\">dwarf galaxies<\/a>, and other features of the Southern Hemisphere night sky. In 2019, the remote and sparsely inhabited island was designated an <a href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/places\/stewart-island-rakiura-dark-sky-sanctuary\/\" rel=\"noopener\">International Dark Sky Sanctuary<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amateur astronomers there and in other places with good night-sky views might search for objects of interest through <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/science\/explore-the-night-sky\/hubbles-night-sky-challenge-may\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Hubble\u2019s Night Sky Challenge<\/a>. In May, when this image was acquired, targets imaged by NASA\u2019s Hubble Space Telescope that were also visible from Earth\u2019s southern latitudes included a star cluster called the <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/science\/explore-the-night-sky\/hubble-caldwell-catalog\/caldwell-94\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Jewel Box<\/a> and a peculiar elliptical galaxy known as <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/hubble\/science\/explore-the-night-sky\/hubble-caldwell-catalog\/caldwell-77\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Centaurus A<\/a>, which may have resulted from two galaxies colliding.<\/p>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>NASA Earth Observatory image by Michala Garrison, using Landsat data from the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/earthexplorer.usgs.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>U.S. Geological Survey<\/em><\/a><em>.
