Engineers evaluate systems and subsystems inside vacuum chambers using lunar regolith simulant to better understand how\u00a0spacesuits, spacecraft components, and mechanisms with moving parts and joints\u00a0will perform during future Artemis missions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"hds-media hds-module wp-block-image\">\n<div class=\"margin-left-auto margin-right-auto nasa-block-align-inline\">\n<div class=\"hds-media-wrapper margin-left-auto margin-right-auto\">\n<figure class=\"hds-media-inner hds-cover-wrapper hds-media-ratio-fit\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/jsc2021e045477.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/jsc2021e045477.jpg?w=2048\" class=\"attachment-2048x2048 size-2048x2048\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"><\/a><\/figure><figcaption class=\"hds-caption padding-y-2\">\n<div class=\"hds-caption-text p-sm margin-0\">Lunar\u00a0spacewalking\u00a0tools\u00a0undergo a\u00a0dust mitigation test\u00a0inside\u00a0Johnson\u2019s\u00a0thermal vacuum chamber.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"hds-credits\">NASA\/Bill Stafford<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NASA Johnson\u2019s Propulsion and Power Division\u00a0developed\u00a0specialized\u00a0systems that make the facility\u2019s lunar simulations possible.\u00a0The facility includes a dust containment and preparation laboratory for ambient testing, a 3-foot cube vacuum chamber, and a 15-foot thermal\u00a0vacuum\u00a0chamber.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside the\u00a0chamber, engineers test hardware under realistic lunar conditions using lunar regolith simulant. The chamber uses a closed-loop nitrogen system to recreate the\u00a0harsh lunar environment.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe facility helps develop and test technologies needed for long-duration lunar exploration,\u201d said\u00a0Mike Salinas, Propulsion\u00a0and Power Division branch deputy chief. \u201cEngineers are advancing techniques to extract resources from lunar regolith,\u00a0which can\u00a0be turned into oxygen for astronauts and liquid oxygen for rocket propellant.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spirit of exploration\u00a0extends beyond\u00a0the facility\u2019s walls.\u00a0Its exterior features a large-scale mural depicting astronauts exploring the lunar surface beneath a view of the cosmos.
